Selecting the Right Respiratory Equipment

To select the appropriate mask one should follow specific steps:
  • To identify the particle hazard needs to be addressed depending on the application: petrochemicals, fertilizers, paints, metallurgical work, grinding etc.
  • To identify the appropriate nominal protection factor (NPF) according to the application e.g.
  • To identify the type of mask between a cup-shaped or a foldable respirator, as well as whether it has adjustable straps or pull type head bands and if it is valved or not

The Importance of Checking for Certification

The use of counterfeit or altered respirators can jeopardize worker’s health and safety. The best way to check that a respirator is certified thus provides
worker with the expected level of protection is to look for certain logos on the mask’s packaging.

  • IFA= Institute for Research and Testing of the German Social Accident Insurance
  • EN 149:2001= European Standard EN 149: 2001
  • CE marking = Compliment with the relevant European legislation
